Bananas are one of the most famous fruits in the world. They can be seen almost everywhere and can be found almost every time. From being a regular-day-snack like banana cue and turon to being our beloved dessert such as halo-halo and saging con hielo, banana reigns in our streets even in our homes. We may be overly familiar with this tropic fruit, but there are still more things about bananas that will surely amaze us! Here are 10 things that will make you bananas over bananas!
1. Banana is not a fruit
Since we were little kids, we were taught that banana is a fruit. When we enumerated the fruits that we know when we were younger, we list it like this: apple, BANANA, oranges, grapes, etc. Hate to burst your fruit bubble, but this is the day you realize that your life has been a lie, because banana is not a fruit, but a berry!
Technically and scientifically, fruits are from flowers which have multiple ovaries and seeds. Banana is in the opposite corner. Banana comes from flowers which have one ovary and one seed – the very definition of a berry. Hence, banana is not a fruit, but a full-fledged berry!
2. Banana does not come from trees
Remember when we were asked where bananas come from, we always respond with a no-brainer response: “Of course, from the banana tree!” Despite all the condescension, what we have believed for so long has been wrong all along! Bananas come from the banana herbs!
In simple terms, the only thing that differentiates herbs from trees is the stem. Herbs do not have wood stems, while trees have. From now on, let’s practice calling our formerly known banana trees as banana herbs!

May it not look like it, but banana is 75% water. It is just like watermelons which has overwhelming water content.
4. Banana is a radioactive
Before you get scared, banana may be radioactive but it is still safe and delicious to eat. Since banana contains potassium which is a radioactive mineral, banana is technically radioactive. However, the radioactivity in bananas is so insignificant that the radioactivity in our body still surpasses those of bananas.
5. The Banana Capital of the world
Banana thrives in warm temperatures, thus it flourishes in tropical countries. No wonder that India is currently considered as The Banana Capital of the World. China and Philippines come in second and third places. Because banana growing is very much alive in India, the banana industry is one of the country’s main sources of income.
